The National Medical Commission (NMC) is the body that oversees medical practice and education in India. It is in charge of establishing requirements for eligibility to practice medicine in India as well as recognizing foreign medical qualifications.

Those holding a foreign medical degree are required to obtain an "Eligibility Certificate" from the NMC in order to practice medicine in India. This certificate, which is required, attests to the foreign medical degree's recognition in India.

For Indian citizens with foreign medical qualifications, the NMC administers the Foreign Medical Graduates Examination (FMGE), additionally referred to as the National Exit Test (NEXT).

People usually need to pass this screening test in order to receive the Eligibility Certificate.
